KidsThe lady in line at Canadian Tire looked at me and the kids and doubtfully asked “Are they all yours?” To which I replied “oh no… they’re not just mine, they’re my wife’s too!” They humoured me with a chuckle at my “dad joke”, and we checked out without any meltdowns (which is critical after you make it known that you are the one responsible for parenting the kids ;))

On a more serious note though, as we packed up, I was reminded that my kids are, in fact, not mine or my wife’s. We don’t own them. They are a stewardship from God.

Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein…”

My kids are among “those who dwell therein”. They belong to the Lord. So do yours. And that radically changes the way we look at parenting.

Here is just a few ways it changes things:

1. The Lord’s priorities for them must become our priorities for them – seeking eternal over temporal, character over abilities, fruit of the Spirit over praise from men, etc.

2. The Lord’s attitude toward them must become our attitude toward them – selflessly choosing to love them not based on their performance but for the glory of God.

3. The Lord’s sovereignty over them must release us from stressing over our plans for them. We are not sovereign over our children’s future, but let’s never, even for a second, think that what we do doesn’t matter. It does.
